Introducing a Law to Protect Fossils on Public Lands
The Society of Vertebrate Paleontology was able to work with Representative James McGovern (D-MA) to introduce a bill to protect vertebrate fossils on federal lands. The Sherwood Group supports the SVP Government Liaison Committee and SVP's sister foundation, Save America's Fossils for Everyone (SAFE).

SVP's continuous efforts successfully created a bipartisan coalition in support of the proposed legislation, including a base of legislators on the House Resources Committee and the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. SVP's Sherwood staff coordinated the approach including:

  • Legislative monitoring
  • Sister Foundation (SAFE) involvement
  • Board member meetings on the Hill to educate legislators on the issues
  • Fostering Congressional support

Influencing NIH and CDC for Tropical Medicine
The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene has an active legislative affairs program through Sherwood's Washington, D.C. partnership with Capitol Associates, Inc.

A Sherwood Group client since 1993, ASTMH is an international organization of doctors, scientists and researchers interested in arbovirology, entomology, medicine, nursing and parasitology. Through its Sherwood/CAI partnership, ASTMH monitors legislation concerning NIH/CDC funding appropriations, and its members frequently present testimony before congressional committees on issues related to tropical medicine (from bioterrorism to human subjects testing to medical laboratory licensure).

Capitol Associates provides assistance in drafting testimony, preps the speakers, and ensures that the information is distributed to key members of congress and, more importantly, to congressional staff members and other associations with similar goals on the Hill.
