Strategic Planning is an Essential Organizational Process
Every organization must have a clear understanding of its mission,
goals and objectives so that it can provide continuity in its programs
and services. Organizations must also have the ability to respond to immediate
threats and opportunities. In the association environment, the primary
threat to continuity is the rotating nature of its volunteer leadership
and the changing "agendas" of newly elected leaders. A viable
strategic plan is the most effective way to ensure the continuity and
integrity of association activities.
The Sherwood Group has assisted many of its client organizations in the
development and implementation of a strategic plan. In some cases, the
planning process was facilitated by Sherwood Group senior managers. In
other cases, the process has been facilitated by outside strategic planning
specialists identified by the staff.
Planning is a difficult process -- implementing the plan is even more
